Umbwe Route is the shortest route passing through the Southern Glaciers and the Western breach of Kibo. This route is so demanding. It is finest but technical mountaineering expeditions and very unsuitable for the inexperienced. The route program doesn't include the prior day arrangement.
Day One: Umbwe gate (2100m) To Umbwe Cave (2940m.)
- It takes 5 to 6 hrs to reach at Umbwe cave (Biviuac No. 1).
- Pass through a narrow crest ridge between Lonzo River and Umbwe River through a dense forest while rising steady with some steep and scramble rocks.
- Spend a night.
Da y Two: Umbwe cave (2940m.) To Barraco (4000m.)
- It is 6 to 7 hrs ascending walking passing through steeply and scramble rocks across the moorland forest to the conical piles of stones to the Southern Glacier branches.
- Between the 4 th and the 5 th hour you will reach Bivouac No. 2 which is 3780m ASL.
- An hour walking later you will see the end of tree line at 3900m.
- 2hrs from Bivouac No. 2 which is 4000m ASL.
- Spend a night.
Day Three: Barraco (4000m.) To Arrow Glacier (4800m.)
Optional One: Barraco Acclimatization
- For Acclimatization you may wish to spend a day at the camp and snooze in the sun and if you feel like, you may take a walk to the High Attitude and then come back to relax.
- Second Option: We keep on trekking to Arrow Glacier 4800m.
- Pass through the western breach from the tree lines to Umbwe Ridge.
- It is the western lateral moraine of the peak and goes straight towards the Western Breach to Arrow Glacier 4800m ASL.
Day Four: Arrow Glacier (4800m.) To Summit and then to Mweka Hut.
- It is an early start day ascending to the Summit
- It is 3 km walking distance which took 6-8 hrs
- It is 1100mts of ascending to the top.
- 12kms of descending through Barafu to Mweka Hut which took 4-7 Hrs.
- Spend a night.
Day Five: Mweka Hut to Mweka Gate
- Breakast at Mweka Hut
- 10kms of descending through a narrow path on the forest and steeply rocks.
- 3-4 Hrs of descending through 1400m. to Mweka Gate.
